Mike and I arrived at the Cherry Lake dam just before sunset on a Saturday in early October. The road up Kibbie Ridge was closed for maintenance past the dam, so we followed the road to the trailhead at the end by starlight -- easy since the road was made of light colored gravel.
On Sunday, we walked nearly to Styx Pass, intending to follow the ridge east to Boundary Lake. However, we cut too far south and ended at Many Island Lake. A few drops of rain, but the sky cleared after dark, giving a beautiful view of the Milky Way galaxy.
Monday we left our camp to dayhike eastward to Boundary Lake, Inferno Lakes, north back to the Cherry Creek trail, and back. Incredible views, made more dramatic by ominous thunder clouds. Serious rain once we passed Inferno Lake, incredible watching the water cascade off the granite. Lost the trail along Cherry Creek, found it again just after dusk, and returned to our camp by starlight.
Tuesday back to the car, following the Kibbie Ridge trail all the way down the ridge, through some beautful groves of cedar and oak.
